When you are a person working with no fixed office, you quickly will begin to find that your laptop will contain so much of your work. It really does become almost your entire business. Now to some extent you can protect it with back-up’s and the like, however this only protects you against loss. What do you do about potential issues with people that are not entirely honest that may get close enough to physically access your laptop.

You may think who would want to get hold of my data, i just do such and such a business no body wants to know about my business. However it is not always about your business, if you are running most of your business from your laptop then there is no doubt that you have probably at some time signed into internet banking, or maybe you store some other important details on the computer. But really it is not even this it is really just that for the most part you don’t really want to think that somone else may just be able to use the computer without your ok.

The solution is to ensure that you have either some sort of password or other security that you need to use to access the computer. While this may not stop someone if they are really desperate to get hold of your information, it will stop anyone that is just out for some fun. Maybe you are working at a table in a cafe, you need to step outside to take a call and you think it will be alright, then you need to lock the computer with the password. This will stop the inquisitive child at the next table thinking it is a great new toy.

It is basic computer security, however it can mean that you don’t need to really question what may or may not have happened on your computer.
